Vertigo Voiced

I've only been to one reading before. That was about 3 years ago. At the time, this super strange guy named Kevin read a few of his poems, which were all visual poems. It was interesting. I had no idea what was happening.
I still don't.
In any case, I found this reading very interesting. I forgot her name already, and the Orient handout card is somewhere downstairs, and I'm too lazy to go find it. Anyway, I found it most interesting what her sources of inspiration are. For some reason, I have this idea that poetry is abstract, and starry and way out there. Hers just seemed to be...down to earth. She took inspiration from her surroundings and seemed to internalize that, then write it down on paper. It made me take a step back and look at my own poetry, which I now see doesn't really have anything to do with me at all. Which isn't to say that hers is, but what I'm getting at is that her works are in essence about her, just more or less glamorized and somewhat fictionalized. Mine are entirely fictional.
Moreover (are poets allowed to use that word? I'm such an author), her poetry was fun and light, and made you laugh, but was still thought-provoking. I especially enjoyed her cowboy poems--she had a very specific character, and he just seemed to come to life as she read his "words." Makes me almost wonder if I could do something similar with one of my literary characters...? Perhaps such a practice might be beneficial for me as an author, in fact. To really nail down a certain character.
Hmm and humm. I'll have to see what I can do.
